I. Allegro non troppo

From his opera Lessons in Love and Violence, described by ResMusica as «a new masterstroke»,

composer George Benjamin has produced a suite which the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its honorary conductor Sir Simon Rattle, has chosen to perform. Combined with Pierre Boulez’s scintillating Éclat and Johannes Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, one of the pillars of the symphonic repertoire, what the British ensemble and conductor have in store for the Philharmonie audience is indeed a lesson, but more of a masterclass than a lesson in love and violence.

For this episode of “the art of conducting”, we sat down with Sir Simon Rattle, the music director of the London Symphony Orchestra. He talked to us about what the lockdown situation looked like for orchestras, the rehearsing & composing process of Ondřej Adámek’s piece “Where are you”, the collaboration between conductor & musicians and much more! Special thanks to the Hotel le Place d’Armes and it’s team for the warm welcome!
