An American musician of Haitian descent,

Leyla McCalla has activism in her blood. Trained as a classical cellist, she also plays the banjo and guitar, sings, and composes. In her songs, she explores her roots and her quest for a fully embraced Creole identity with feminist overtones. A frenzied plunge into the turmoil of history, her music resonates powerfully in today’s world.
