III. Allegro Molto

Sir John Eliot Gardiner takes the audience on a musical voyage!

The first stop is the Middle East, with Maurice Ravel’s Shéhérazade, inspired by the storyteller of the Arabian Nights. Then, off to Finland with Jean Sibelius. Who better to depict this country than the one whose birthday was later chosen as the «Day of Finnish Music»? On 13.02., you will hear his peaceful Symphony N° 5, whose final theme was inspired by swans crossing a lake: «Today I saw 16 swans. One of the greatest moments of my life». From tales as old as time to the beauty of the Finnish landscape, you’re in for a treat with this concert!

Ahead of his performance with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg together with the Monteverdi Choir at the Philharmonie, we sat down with Sir John Eliot Gardiner for a new episode of our video series "The Art of Conducting" He talked to us about how the repertoire affects the gestures of conducting and music making, the sound of «period instruments» in today's orchestras, about the similarities between managing a bio-farm & leading an orchestra and much more!
