Appointing a new
Ma stro:
a look behind-the-scenes

Our colleagues Patrick Coljon and Matthew Studdert-Kennedy, both members of the search committee for the new Music Director, explain how they came to choose Martin Rajna.

Why and how was Martin ultimately chosen?

Patrick Coljon, Head of Orchestra: A search committee was formed to define the ideal profile and gather as many suggestions as possible. The committee met several times to review potential candidates who were interested and available. At the same time, after each collaboration with a guest conductor we always send a survey to musicians who participated in the concert.
The survey about Martin Rajna received highly positive feedback, with many comments stressing the importance of acting quickly to hire him. Encouraged by these highly favourable opinions and the support of the majority of the Orchestra members, the committee convened and approved the beginning of negotiations with Martin Rajna.

Gustavo Gimeno spent 10 years leading the Orchestra. What about Martin Rajna?

Matthew Studdert-Kennedy, Head of Artistic Planning: His initial contract spans four seasons, during which he will conduct for approximately ten weeks each year, presenting around eight different programmes per season. This offers an exciting opportunity to explore a vast repertoire and numerous works! We have already begun working on these projects and eagerly anticipate sharing this music with audiences in Luxembourg and beyond.

What qualities are essential to being a great conductor?

Matthew Studdert-Kennedy, Head of Artistic Planning: Great conductors stand out for their exceptional musicality and distinctive personality. During his first collaboration with the Luxembourg Philharmonic last November, Martin Rajna clearly demonstrated these qualities, establishing an immediate connection with the musicians of the Orchestra. The bond that was formed was so strong, and the potential so evident, that we quickly decided to commit to a shared future, with Martin Rajna taking on the role of Music Director starting in the 2026/27 season.
